Juicing vs blending - #CurrysIntroJuicing

A few weeks ago I went along to a Joes Bloggers event to learn all about juicing. Juicing is very in right now and a very popular way to stay healthy. My first foray into juicing was two years ago when trying out the Jason Vale 7-day detox cleanse, so I was keen to learn more about it and its benefits. The event was with Curry's and Phillips and took place in Kings Cross, London. 

First up, we were given the yummiest spread of wraps and drinks - all healthy of course (!) as we sat down to get to know the other bloggers. Then we had a talk from Stephanie, the founder of Raw & Juicy, to talk about the difference between juicing and blending.

Stephanie's own journey is inspiring as she started the company in 2006. She was suffering from chronic fatigue which had her feeling unwell and sleeping for 14 hours a day. She was put on a combination of medication to try and fix the problem but they actually ended up adding to the fatigue. After doing some research she foudn that a juice fast was the best way to cleanse her system. She put together a plan for herself to do from him and it drastically helped with her health making her fatigue disappear. She found her passion and started the company.

So back to the juicing, quite simply, it is the extraction of juice from fruits and vegetables, which leaves behind the pulp. By removing the fibre it makes it easier for the nutrients to be absorbed into the body - were told it takes about 15 minutes! That's much quicker than if you were eating your food.

Of course, like anything there are negatives, and with juicing the bad point is that because the fibre contains 30% of the nutrients it leaves you with 70%. Without the fibre in your juice you body's digestive system is given a rest as it doesn't have to break it all down. I know from having tried a juice diet a couple of years ago that you can get hungry quickly when you start it, but as your body gets used to this the feeling subsides. Also, it'ss more likely to have spikes in blood sugar levels because of the sugar in fruit. You can avoid this by adding more vegetables instead.

On the other side of the coin is blending, which leaves no pulp and just blends the whole fruit and vegetables (and seeds/ nuts etc) together. By blending it all up the fibre is broken up and this makes it easier to digest than eating the whole fruit or vegetable. It releases the nutrients slower into the blood stream too. 

We were told that they are both different and be used for different reasons. I know from previously doing a juice cleanse that juicing alone gave me hunger pangs, my blood sugar was all over the place. When i started blending instead and making smoothies it kept me fuller for longer, but I missed making juices and felt 'cleaner' by starting my day with a juice. Now I have been combining the two  and like the variety of having them both. 
Now armed with all this information we watched a mocktail masterclass by The Cocktail Service. They used a Philips Avance Blender to blitz strawberries, raspberries, honey, lemon juice, cranberry juice and ice to make a 'Berries Matter' mocktail. It was delicious!
After the demo we had the chance of making our own mocktails. For the first one we cut up a melon, pineapple, kiwi fruit, bananas, a mango and ice. I loved this juice!
After this we used the Philips Viva Collection Juicer to make a juice using carrots and beetroot, and added to the blender with the avocado, celery sticks and ice. This was a lot tangier and not to my taste as much as the first one. 

I had a fun evening learning lots about juicing and blending and came away armed with lots of new ideas to try at home! With the sunny weather we've been having recently I am more inspired to try out some new recipes!

Max Factor Creme Puff Blusher in Gorgeous Berries

One of the few things I can't live without is a good blusher. Rosy cheeks do wonders for adding life to the face and making you look instantly awake. And when I saw this Max Factor Creme Puff Blusher I knew I had to have one! I went for the darkest shade in Gorgeous Berries, which is a beautiful pink colour.

Get the look - Towie's Lydia Bright

Towie was back on our screens last night as the gang headed to Marbella. It's making me realise that I am really in need of a holiday! I was loving Lydia Bright's look in particular. She looked chic in a white bikini and orange kaftan combo.

The bikini was from Pretty Little Thing and the bandeau top and strappy bikini bottoms cost £8 each.
For a similar style you can check out this multi-strap hipster bikini pant from Asos for £12.
And this Lucia Bandeau Bikini from Missguided was £17.99, but is now down to £5.69.
The kaftan is in a lightweight crepe material - perfect for the sunny weather and to use as a cover-up if needed. It costs £20.

The Sunday post

I'm going retro and bringing back the Sunday post so I can have a bit of a chat about what I've been up to lately. Funnily enough these were one of my favourite posts to do, so hopefully you will like that I have brought them back.
I've had a busy couple of weeks behind the scenes as I have been working on my blog. You may have noticed that it has a bit of a new look.... and a new name! I decided to change it to something that was more personal to me, and what better than Safira Says?! I've also finally bought my own domain name after saying I would for the past four years. I personally like the fresh new look and think it looks more clean. A big big thank you to Pipdig for sorting it all out for me! I'm currently working on a revamped 'About Me' section so if you have any examples of some good ones I would love to see them.
Last weekend I went back to Wales for my younger sister's birthday. We went for a couple of games of pool before going for some food. I got rid of her under the ruse of asking her to check the ticket on the car while I set up a birthday surprise for her. She got the birthday song routine complete with candles in her dessert spelling out her name. Ahhhhhh!
I've been to a couple of events recently that I am in the process of writing up. The first was the Easilocks event, where I got my hair styled - I loved the look! The second event was a Joes Blogs event, #Currysintrojuicing, where we made some juices and smoothies and learnt all about their healthy benefits.
Looking ahead, Ramadhan will be starting this week. I'm sorting myself out and my cupboards so I am stocked up and ready to go. I expect I will be tired by the end of each day and the last thing I want to do is stress about cooking, so I've been browsing the latest Good Food magazine for some quick recipes that I can make to open my fast with.

Afternoon Tea inspired nails

Last month I went for Afternoon Tea twice - yes, twice! I blame this on Aysh for getting me hooked on it again. After I had the bug after the first time, I decided to paint my nails in a suitably Afternoon Tea style to match my flowery dress.

For this look I went for two coats of Barry M's Speedy Quick Dry Polish in Road Rage. It's a beautiful muted mint green which I am loving for the summer. I drew on the pink flowers using a large dotting tool and making haphazard round designs. The colour was OPI's Kiss Me On My Tulips, which is my favourite pink of the moment - bright and vibrant. I then used a white, Ciate's Snow Virgin using a nail art brush to outline the details of the roses, before finishing off with a topcoat.
If I was picky I would add darker green leaves to the roses next time, but I was quite happy with the roses this time around, and it's gotten me lots of compliments since I've been wearing it.
